1. General Information

1.1. What are forums and boards?

A fundamental idea of the of Internet is the worldwide communication.

If Mr. Smith wants to buy a car today, he does not have to wait until the next regulars' table to get opinions of other motorists. Instead he is looking for a car forum in Internet where he can tell others about his interests and preferences. If he returns to that forum the next day he probably got answers by others and he can talk about which model is most suitable for him.

Currently there are lots of forums in Internet about different topics. The range goes from A automobiles to Z zoos. Depending from the configuration of a forum users have to register in the forum before they can use it. Now they can open topics ( so called “threads”) or give answers to existing topics. The biggest forums in Internet have more than ten thousands of registered users and millions of posts. Forums offer lots of features like categorized areas where topics can be arranged (these forums are often called “boards”).

1.2. Setting up your own forum

If webmasters want to set up their own forum they have certain possibilities.

On the one hand there are some providers in Internet who offer forums for free (including hosting). Often these forums have only a limited range of features and can only be adjusted slightly. On the other hand there are different programs of discussion boards which have to be installed on a web server. WoltLab Burning Board belongs to this group.

1.3. History of WoltLab Burning Board

The history of WoltLab Burning Board commenced in February 2001 when the development of the first version of the discussion board software was started. After one month of development time this early version could be used for private purposes. There it convinced with its functional efficiency which lead to the decision to release the software for other users. The program was being improved and tested for a while until the first public version was released on May 16 2001.

In August 2001 the development of a radically improved second version of this software was started. End of March 2002 the second version of WoltLab's popular board system was released after a development time of more than eight months. This version has been continuously improved.
